How to Choose the Right Training Provider in South Africa: An 8-Point Checklist

1. Check Accreditation First — Always

This is non-negotiable. For your training to lead to recognised qualifications and count toward funding and B-BBEE, the provider must be properly accredited.

Look for accreditation with:

• The relevant SETA for your sector, and/or
• The QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations)

Ask for accreditation numbers and the specific qualifications and unit standards they're accredited to offer. A credible provider will share these without hesitation.

Tip: A provider may be accredited for some programmes but not others. Always confirm accreditation for the specific qualification you need.

2. Confirm NQF Alignment

Reputable training is aligned to the National Qualifications Framework. NQF-aligned programmes earn learners credits and qualifications that are nationally recognised and transferable — unlike generic certificates that hold no formal weight.

3. Look at the Provider's B-BBEE Level

If B-BBEE matters to your business (and in South Africa, it usually does), the provider's own B-BBEE level affects the value of what you spend with them. Training spend with a strong B-BBEE-rated provider can enhance your procurement and skills development outcomes. Ask for their B-BBEE certificate.

4. Assess Their Track Record and Reputation

Experience and results matter. Before committing, consider:

• How long they've operated in the South African market
• Client references and case studies in your industry
• Pass rates and learner outcomes
• Reviews and reputation

A provider who has delivered for businesses like yours is a safer bet than an unproven one.

5. Evaluate Customisation, Not Just Catalogues

Off-the-shelf courses have their place, but the best providers tailor training to your business — your context, your challenges, your goals. Ask whether they:

• Conduct a needs analysis or skills audit
• Adapt content to your industry and environment
• Offer flexible delivery (in-person, online, blended, on-site)

6. Check the Range of Delivery Methods

Your workforce isn't one-size-fits-all, and your training shouldn't be either. A strong provider offers blended, mobile and on-site options so you can train head-office staff and frontline teams alike — across provinces if needed.

7. Ask About Funding and Compliance Support

This is where great providers earn their keep. The right partner doesn't just deliver training — they help you fund it and stay compliant. Look for support with:

• Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR) submissions
• SETA grant applications and liaison
• Learnership administration and Section 12H guidance
• B-BBEE Skills Development reporting

A provider who helps you recover your Skills Development Levy and claim grants effectively pays for a portion of your training.

8. Consider Ongoing Support and Partnership

Training shouldn't end when the workshop does. The best providers offer assessment, moderation, certification support and a relationship that grows with your business — not a transaction that ends at invoice.
